HS Codes for Shipping from the US to the EU
Shipping from the US to the EU uses the EU's 8-digit Combined Nomenclature (CN) plus an optional 2-digit TARIC suffix. The first 6 digits match the international HS code; you'll need EORI registration and an EU import declaration.

Code format
EU customs uses a 10-digit code: the first 6 digits are the international HS code, the next 2 are the CN extension, and the final 2 are the TARIC suffix used for measures (suspensions, anti-dumping, quotas). Importers file at 10 digits.
Required documentation
Commercial invoice, packing list, transport document (Bill of Lading or AWB), CN/TARIC code, EORI number, and origin documentation (USMCA or other applicable certificate of origin).
Duty and VAT
EU import duty applies at the TARIC rate. VAT is charged on top of duty + freight at the destination country's standard rate (typically 19–25%). The IOSS scheme covers consignments under €150 for B2C.
FAQ
- Is the HS code the same in the US and the EU?
- The first 6 digits are identical worldwide. Beyond 6 digits, the US uses its 10-digit HTS and the EU uses its 10-digit CN+TARIC — they will not match.
- Do I need an EORI to ship to the EU?
- Yes. Any importer of record clearing goods in the EU needs an EORI number issued by an EU member state.
